Geary best of kiwis - Monday, 1 February 2010
Despite a triple bogey eight on the Par 5 17th, Josh Geary was again the top Kiwi at the Michael Hill New Zealand Open in Queenstown with a four round total of 281 and a tie for ninth.
His four round scores of 69,69,73, 70 was one better than Phil Tataurangi (69,68,71,74) and with a further shot back to Bradley Isles (71, 67, 72, 73).
After a run of four consecutive birdies, Geary found the hazard off the tee on 17 and after a “comedy of bad lies” he dropped from fourth to 10th place.
``It left me with a bitter taste in the mouth. It was a shame to kill the momentum but all in all to finish two-under was definitely pleasing because it is pretty hard out there.
``I played better today and had a few putts drop for me on the back nine which was a nice change from the first three rounds.
``On 17 there was a strong left to right breeze off the tee which is my least favoured wind. I had a little fade and the wind grabbed it right and into the water. I got a nasty lie from the drop and the ball jumped out of the rough and finished in another nasty lie by rocks.’’
Geary’s fourth shot flew the green into another difficult position and it all added up with a triple bogey.
``I like the course and play well here but I’m not really sure why. It’s been good to have the support of my girlfriend, close family and also relatives here for the last three years.’’
Geary said his form this week augured well for the next Nationwide Tour event, the Moonah Classic in Melbourne next week.
``The signs are encouraging, my game has stepped up in the last two years and is at a higher level.’’
